So I finally moved into my new house this week & its massive compared to my old house. I had an old oak tv stand my Mum gave me, however I never had anywhere to put my CDs & DVDs, (I had built in shelves in my old house). Whilst trawling the web for an affordable yet stylish cd & dvd storage unit, I came across the Opus Solid Oak Hi Fi and CD Storage Media Cabinet! I am well impressed with it, the quality is really strong and the style really suits my modern house.

The best thing for me; was I never even had to build my brand new CD and DVD storage unit - it comes ready built and the delivery guys even took it into the room of my choosing. As the schools get ready to go back after the summer holidays, furniture retailers will be looking to the traditional rise in sales that happens at this time of year. But if things are tough - and its been a difficult couple of years - then the price slashing will start sooner rather than later.

This may sound like good news if you're looking for an oak tv unit for example, but it does have a downside. When retailers slash prices they're also putting pressure on manufacturers to cut costs. The result is that the quality and specification of items is bound to suffer. At the risk of repeating myself, if you're looking for a good quality oak tv unit then now is the time to buy, while the prices are low but the quality is still good.

I'm pleased to note that my advice to people that they should not postpone purchases of oak furniture is being heeded. Several retailers of my acquaintance report improvements in sales of their better quality oak furniture ranges.

While this is good for them, it's also good for customers because it helps to keep supplies of good furniture flowing and discourages attempts by retailers to reduce quality in order to slash prices and lift flagging sales. My view is therefore unchanged at the moment: if you want good quality oak furniture - buy it sooner rather than later.

Don't know who will be the government by tomorrow but whoever it is, they're going to have a massive job to cut spending and get the Country out of trouble. How does this affect oak tv units? Well, prices of good quality oak furniture have been affordable for some time in the UK but since the beginning of the year they have risen by between 10 and 20%.

This has been due to various factors such as the rising cost of fuel oil for shipping and the weakness of the Pound against other currencies. Neither of these factors are likely to stop or recede soon and when spending cuts begin to bite in this country the furniture industry will react by supplying lower quality furniture in order to maintain or reduce current retail prices and stay in business. My advice to anyone thinking of buying quality furniture - such as an oak tv unit - is, if you can afford it, buy it now. You'll find it hard to get this sort of quality at these prices in six months time.

So how do you do this? Well, you need great furniture, of course. The furniture in your living room usually includes several large pieces and is often the focal point of the room. Your guests are going to be sitting on your chairs and sofa, for example, so they’re obviously going to take note of it more so than they might take note of a book shelf or your bedroom furniture. A large sofa can attract the eye right away, too, especially if it has an interesting print to the fabric or is a very bold colour.
